The Commission on Religious Education was established to review the legal, education and policy frameworks for Religious Education, by a wide-ranging, inclusive and evidence-based process designed to inform policy makers about these areas. The ultimate aim was to improve the quality and rigour of religious education and its capacity to prepare pupils for life in modern Britain.

In September 2018, the Commission released its final report, Religion and Worldviews: the way forward. A national plan for RE. It sets out a National Plan for RE comprising of 11 recommendations, and calls on the Government to consider and adopt it.
