RE Council Member Organisations with a focus on Wales met to discuss challenges to RVE teacher recruitment and the closure of Higher Education courses.

Members agreed to write an Open Letter to Welsh Government, calling for support to the sector.

In particular, discussion was had regarding the circular connection between strong Higher Education, RVE teacher recruitment, and new university candidates studying to become RVE teachers.  Additionally, the lack of a bursary for ITT in Wales and the implications on recruitment was raised as an issue.

Despite poor recruitment, RVE has not been designated as a priority subject for 2025-26.  At the same time, the number of trainees that passed the ITT course in year 2023-24 was 11.
