New curriculum promotes inclusive study of religions and worldviews in UK schools

Writing in The Times, Sarah Lane Cawte, chair of the Religious Education Council of England and Wales, welcomes news that the Religious Education Council of England and Wales launched a new curriculum guide aimed at improving RE practice in schools in England. She says it could not come at a better time, citing a recent Ofsted report into the subject which described it as sometimes “lacking depth”. She says that although there is a wealth of high-quality RE, there are also far too many schools in the country that do young people a disservice when it comes to getting to grips with the nature of modern belief. She also cites a survey which reveals a majority of parents are supportive. It found seven in ten want their child’s RE lesson to be a place where they openly discuss their beliefs with others and also teach the social and historical context of different religions.
